Early American kitchens were simple, comfortable and functional with a rustic charm that made them warm and inviting. The focal point of these kitchens were the hearths, where nearly all of the cooking took place. Achieving this look is simply done by incorporating cookware as decor, using wooden furniture, keeping the color scheme muted and having lantern-like or candle-esque light fixtures. To take this style even further, add wooden beams to the ceiling, flooring and cabinetry from a knotty wood species with a natural finish and a soapstone sink with an antique faucet. Other elements could include braided floor rugs, worn metal accessories and beadboard paneling.
